Introduction
We collaborated with our grade 7 students here in Osaka to design a unit centered around their interests and current learning. This inspired our interdisciplinary study to focus around the essential question of: What can our school do to become more sustainable? Our study reflects our students’ commitment to creating a school community of empowered global citizens in sustainability. By confronting the amount of recyclable waste that is created in our daily lives and transforming it into creative art, students will spread environmental and sustainable awareness while promoting action. This will be achieved through the collection of bottle caps, and reorganizing and recycling them into a mural. Our students’ learning is brought to a global stage through exploring the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, combining multi-faceted approaches and perspectives of various disciplinary lenses through English, Science, Math and Art, connecting learning beyond the classroom.
